PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce is
excited to announce the addition of a graduate level
class to the Rollie Denison Leadership InstituteTM
(RDLI) this fall for area professionals in Isabella County.
The RDLI Capstone Program is the culmination of demand
from past graduates, and the dedication of community leaders from
the Chamber, the Vision 2020 Leadership Committee and the Leadership Advisory Board.

The RDLI Capstone Program is a 6-month class that meets one day a month to provide a much deeper assessment and building of one’s leadership skills and abilities.

The class begins with a peer assessment of an individual’s existing leadership qualities and abilities. The feedback from this assessment is generated into a comprehensive report that class members will use throughout their experiences and activities in the class to enhance the good and strengthen the areas that need work.

The availability of this program couldn’t come at a better time. With a recovering economy and with businesses and organizations in need of strong leadership to charge forward, the RDLI Capstone Program is the springboard to launch the next wave of leaders throughout Isabella County.

Much like the current RDLI curriculum, the Capstone Program will utilize experiential learning activities and techniques to deliver the elevated leadership content. In addition to activities and discussions with current and past community leaders, class members will also be required to keep a journal of their experiences and revelations. A class project will also be a required component of the class.

The cost of the program will be $650 per person which helps offset the costs for the self assessment tools/reports, tuition for a full day each month for six months, food costs, program coordination, orientation packets, supplies, materials and graduation expenses.

Class are tentatively scheduled for the third Friday of each month beginning with a short orientation on September 16, 2011. A finalized schedule will be available by mid-August.

All of us have the potential for remarkable achievement and the RDLI Capstone Program will help us get there. The Chamber invites you to join us in this extraordinary leadership experience and become a part of this learning community. CAPSTONE PROGRAM

Presented By:
RDLI Capstone Program Facilitator and Coordinator
We are very excited and fortunate to have Dan Gaken, Director of the Central Michigan University Leadership Institute, facilitate the six monthly Capstone classes. Dan is a graduate of Central Michigan University and gained a wealth of leadership experience while pursing a Bachelor’s degree in history and as a member of the second class of Leader Advancement Scholars.

His extensive involvement with Residence Life included membership in Residence Hall Assembly, serving as the president of Barnes Hall Council, and a paraprofessional resident assistant position. As a junior he served on the executive board of the CMU Program Board and was a member of On the Fly Productions, the two largest programming organizations at CMU.  During his senior year Dan chaired MAINStage, the Connections Leadership Conference, and Siblings Weekend.
In August of 2004 Dan Gaken was named Central Michigan University’s Coordinator of Leadership Development and assumed responsibility for the university’s student leadership development programs. In addition to his duties in the Leadership Institute, Dan has served as an advisor for Academic Orientation, volunteers for the Admissions Office, is the advisor for Habitat for Humanity, and sits on the Chapter Advisory Council for Sigma Alpha Epsilon, a social fraternity he helped found as an undergraduate student.

An active member of the Mt. Pleasant Community, Dan is the President of the Mt. Pleasant Chapter of the CMU Alumni Association. Dan is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators as well as the International Leadership Association.

Dan's first book, Leadership & Service: An Introduction, which he co-authored with Senator George McGovern and Dr. Donald Simmons, was published by Kendall/Hunt in 2008.

We are proud to announce that Scott Gillespie will
serve as the coordinator for the RDLITM Capstone program.
Scott is a 2008-09 RDLI graduate, served as the
coordinator/facilitator of the 2010-11 RDLI class and holds
a Bachelor of Science degree as a 1994 graduate of CMU.

Scott and Dan lead the development of the Capstone
curriculum through surveys of RDLI graduates, fellow
V2020 committee members as well as staff and  Board
members from the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce.

Scott has held several community leadership positions
including Director of Admissions for Davenport University
and creating his own business consulting practice. As an alumnus of the first professionally facilitated class, Scott was instrumental in garnering community support and financial resources for the initial launching of the RDLI Leadership Enhancement Fund with the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation. He also was the creator of the monthly, post-RDLI meetings for class members to stay in touch called, “JavaShip.” Scott brings a wealth of business, program management, facilitation and volunteer experience to the RDLI Capstone Program.
